One Clog or a Main Line Problem?
If one sink in your Thornton home drains slow, you likely have a clog in that one line. If two or more drains act up at the same time, the problem is usually in your main sewer line. That difference changes the fix, the cost, and how fast you need a plumber.
This guide shows how to tell them apart. It also covers what Big Apple Plumbing does on a main line call and when a clog turns into a sewer repair.
Signs of a Single Drain Clog
A single drain clog stays in one place. You will see it in just one fixture while the rest of the house works fine.
Common signs:
- The kitchen sink drains slow, but the bathroom sinks and toilets work normally.
- One shower holds water around your feet, but the tub down the hall is fine.
- A bathroom sink gurgles, but nothing else in the house does.
Kitchen clogs usually come from grease, food scraps, and coffee grounds. Bathroom clogs usually come from hair and soap buildup. These are close to the fixture, so a drain snake or small auger clears most of them in one visit.
Signs Your Main Sewer Line Is Clogged
Your main sewer line carries everything from every drain in the house out to the city sewer. When it clogs, water has nowhere to go, so it backs up at the lowest drains first.
Watch for these signs:
- Water comes up in the shower or tub when you flush a toilet.
- Two or more drains are slow at the same time.
- The basement floor drain backs up or smells like sewage.
- Toilets gurgle when the washing machine drains.
- You notice sewage smell in the yard near the cleanout.
If you see more than one of these, stop running water. Don’t run the dishwasher or washing machine. Every gallon you send down the line has to go somewhere, and in a full clog, it comes back up inside the house. Call for drain cleaning right away.
Why Main Line Clogs Happen in Thornton Homes
Thornton has a mix of older and newer homes. The City of Thornton’s 2024 Housing Needs Assessment found that about 41% of the city’s homes were built in 2000 or later. About 18% were built between 1960 and 1979, and another 5% between 1940 and 1959.
That split matters for your sewer line.
Older homes. Many homes in Original Thornton and the older neighborhoods in south Thornton have clay or cast iron sewer lines. Clay pipe has joints every few feet, and tree roots grow into those joints looking for water. Cast iron rusts and scales on the inside over decades, which narrows the pipe and catches debris. Our post on tree roots and sewer line damage in Thornton covers root problems in more detail.
Newer homes. Homes built in the last 25 years usually have PVC sewer lines. PVC holds up better, but it still clogs. Grease, “flushable” wipes, and paper towels are the usual causes. We also see belly spots in newer lines, where a section of pipe sags and holds water and waste.
What Happens on a Thornton Drain Cleaning Call
Here is how our technicians handle a main line clog.
1. Find the cleanout. Most Thornton homes have a sewer cleanout in the basement, crawlspace, or yard. It gives us direct access to the main line without pulling a toilet.
2. Clear the line with a cable auger. We run a motorized cable auger through the cleanout. It cuts through the clog and gets water flowing again. For roots, the cutting head breaks them up so the line drains.
3. Run a sewer camera inspection. Once water flows, we send a camera down the line. This shows what caused the clog. It could be roots, a cracked pipe, a sag, or buildup. You see the video with us, so you know what is down there instead of guessing.
4. Give you straight options. If the camera shows a clean, healthy line, the job is done. If it shows roots in a cracked joint or a broken pipe, we explain the repair options. You get the cost of each one before any work starts.
When a Clog Becomes a Sewer Repair
Drain cleaning clears the clog. It does not fix a broken pipe. If your main line keeps clogging every few months, something in the pipe is catching waste over and over.
The camera usually shows one of these:
- Roots growing through cracked clay joints
- A collapsed or offset section of pipe
- Heavy scale inside old cast iron
- A belly or sag that holds waste
At that point, cleaning the line again only buys time. Big Apple Plumbing handles sewer line repair in Thornton, including trenchless options when the line qualifies. Sewer repairs come with a 5-year warranty. For larger repairs, Wisetack financing lets you split the cost into payments so the fix doesn’t have to wait.
How to Prevent Main Line Clogs
A few habits cut down on main line clogs:
- Pour cooking grease into a can and throw it in the trash once it cools.
- Throw away wipes, even ones labeled flushable.
- Use a hair catcher in showers and tubs.
- Know where your cleanout is so a technician can reach it fast.
- If your home is older and has big trees near the sewer line, ask about a camera inspection before roots cause a backup.
If you notice odd colors or sludge in your drains, our guide on what drain sludge colors mean explains what each one points to.
